The morning arrived at Jel in the brisk spring evening. The city guards at the gate informed them that while nicer inns existed, the closest one to the gate was The Drunken Yeti. Led by Ebil Yalies who dropped gold like water, the tavern was singing the praises of the party. Ninon Salvo was soon on stage entertaining the crowd with music of a like they had never heard. At the prompting of Ebil and with encouragement from the crowd, soon Raqim Anuar also took the stage, adding pyrotechnics to the show. The crowd went wild.

A Visitor from Afar[edit]

During the show a rather non-descript human (rogue possibly?) fellow inquired if the part was from the south, on the lookout for a missing wizard. He explained to Lirris Liadon, Ornel Harlhome, and Arisa Petrine (who seemed somewhat preoccupied), that he was interested in securing the welfare of Mambet Mambet and any other wizards who might have gone missing in the area. He encouraged the party to intensify their search for the wizards and report back to him in exchange for clues and of course, gold.

The party was hesitant to do any dealings at all with the messenger, but eventually agreed that it might benefit them, particularly in matters of reward. After a private moment they called back the messenger and agreed to help with his master's wishes, who the learned to be the wizard Hedgewind Jalinbeti.

The messenger, who gave his name as Sholpan Zamziya explained that more wizards than just Mambet Mambet had turned up missing and that he and his master suspected that this might be the work of a nefarious sorceress, Gulaisha Abzal. He suggested that just finding the sorceress would yield a great reward from his master, but capturing her might come with an immense reward.

The following morning the party was delivered a cylindrical shaped box with an arrow on it. The arrow pointed south. The instructions on the box indicated that the arrow would point toward a type of structure (or perhaps building materials?) favoured by the sorceress and should lead the party to her.

Shopping Day[edit]

The first time in a big city, the party opted to check out the local shops. The loot from their recent haul was good, but they soon concluded that it would not buy them much in the way of magical items. They did, however, invest in cold weather gear and supplies for a trip into what was probably going to be mountainous terrain.

Between sampling the local wares, Raquim Anuar set out to return his recovered book the the ROSA archives. In Jel the archives were safe within the Jel Citadel. After explaining his credentials, the guards let him past to visit the local librarian. He returned the book and expressed a matter of importance that would need to be discussed with, Seilda Alibek the Grand Archivist of Soltustik. The librarian set up a meeting in a private room where they had a communication device called a palantir.

A Game of Memes[edit]

Raquim hadn't said much before the Grand Archivist decided to teleport to the library to talk to him in person. In as concise a way as possible she explained that a few people in the world, mostly of a magical inclination had determined that the Memes of Aspan had magical qualities far exceeding their original intent, which was just to be a set of books.

The people who have come to understand the memes and their power have been in a race to acquire the memes and experiment with them to see the extent of their power. In some cases, they have simply caused their own deaths, while in others the power has enabled them to gain (or maintain) great positions of power. The Grand Archivist produced a couple of maps detailing what was currently known, one with a set of cities known to have one or more memes and the other, the locations where these memes are most likely to end up.

The Grand Archivist explained that ROSA and the country of Soltustik would very much like to enter this competition for memes. She requested a copy of whatever notes she had from Mambet Mambet and that he find out his whereabouts, should he still be alive.

On the Road Again[edit]

After another night of performing, this time the crowd clamoring for "MORE NINON", the party put to rest back at The Drunken Yeti. They prepared for the road the next morning. Raquim Anuar returned a copy of his notes to the ROSA archive and the party set out toward the south, following their makeshift compass.

Eventually, they made their way back all the way to the home of the farmer whom they had met days earlier. The farmer explained that the disappearance of his animals had stopped and that he had managed to get his back nine acres to seed, but that it was tough without one of his mules... and after a little more discussion he agreed to let the party camp in his barn.

After a restful night, the party was greeted to a warm breakfast prepared by the farmer's wife. They set out into the path and up over the thousands of stairs carved into the mountain rock. Some thousand steps up the party came across a pair of trolls blocking the pass. "You will not pass!" they bellowed in their huge crackling voices.

The party had other ideas and proceeded to attack the trolls, who proved no match for them. Ornel Harhome did momentarily feel one of the troll's wrath as he was gouged by both claws, but he was quickly healed by Ebil Yalies and was good as new after the trolls fell. The party scooped up the loot from what looked like the last ill fated party to climb these stairs and proceeded on to the abandoned Temple of Woden.

There, they spent a second peaceful night...
