Hel was one of a monstrous litter of children born to Loki and a giantess. Woden first discovered the offspring and not knowing what best to do, decided to spare their lives. At this time he appointed Hel the goddess of Helheim, the underworld so that she could watch over the dead.
Depictions[edit]
Hel is depicted as a beautiful woman on her left side and a corpse on the right. For mortals, she is difficult to look upon.

Intercession[edit]
Hel is rarely interested in the lives of mortals. When a mortal dies and enters her world, she has little concern if they escape Helheim through some magic or divination, because she knows they will return. She will become far more possessive of a spirit entering her domain who might otherwise be immortal. These spirits she will fight to keep.
