The Aydahar (π AY-duh-HAR or π EYE-duh-HARRR) are a race of draconic-infused humans originally of human origin, but whose ancestors are of a draconic lineage.
Overview
The Aydahar are a strain of humans infected with the "seed" of Dragons. An Aydahar comes into this world through the union of a Dragon and a humanoid strain, or by the union of two Aydahar. Outside of their appearance, Aydahar life is essentially the same as that of the remainder of humanity.
The Aydahar territory, the country of Altinqor, is the homeland of most of the Dragons of Otan and for good reason. Dragons, who are normally quite aggressive toward anything but other Dragons, share a symbiosis with the Aydahar. As repayment for their kindness and protection, the Aydahar are often seen in the service of Dragons, cleaning their nests and tending to their various needs.
In other regards, the Aydahar conduct themselves as everyone else. They seek power. They often seek adventure and they are more than willing to leave their home country if adventure calls.
Physical Characteristics
Aydahar physiology is surprisingly similar to humans. Despite their reptilian appearance, they are mammalian. Females produce milk after pregnancy and their ovulation and gestation periods are also identical to Humans. After birth, however, changes begin rapidly. Human-looking babies begin to develop elongated jawlines and the snout, typical of all Aydhar.
As the Aydahar age, their skin develops scales, much as humans develop hair. Their heads, rather than a coif of hair tend to produce a distinct pair of horns, though they may produce as many as a dozen horns. It is still possible for them to sprout human hair, and females in particular pride themselves in the ability to grow long locks if it is possible for them.
Aydahar hands and feet also undergo a significant translation, particularly the feet, which take on a nearly talon-like form. Their hands bear claws far more substantial in density than Human fingernails.
Lastly, the Aydahar can grow tails and in rarer cases wings. The latter two mutations, undoubtedly constructed entirely from the "dragon seed," can become quite advanced. The tails can become prehensile, with the ability to carry items and even wield weapons. The wings, fully formed, will enable the Aydahar to fly, given the proper training.
Natural and Latent Abilities
Aydahar naturally grow scales in the place of hair, giving them a slight advantage to damage resistance. This resistance may be extended for certain types of damage depending on the type of Aydahar. A Koke Aydahar, for example, might have enhanced resistance to electrical damage.
Additionally, the Aydahar almost always have tails; however, in some cases, these tails are prehensile. In these cases, the tails can provide balance and support, or even carry items and weapons.
Lastly, in rare cases, the Aydahar may take on one of the most coveted of draconic features: the ability to fly. Not all Aydahar with wings can fly as this requires training and a lot of patience. This skill can only be learned well from an expert with the same condition. Possibly a winged Ungir might be persuaded to train a winged Aydahar, should they be unable to find a native trainer.
Society and Culture
The Aydahar strain is divided into six substrains and from this, their society has manifested six major cultural divisions. Independent of these six subcultures, however, there is a set of striking similarities. All six of the divisions have a progenitor type; the Altin Aydahar from the Metal Dragon, Kizil Aydahar from Fire, etc.
Aydahar share their own unique language. To the uninitiated, the Aydahari language sounds like a pack of hungry dogs eating, but to the trained ear, the Aydahari language has grammar and inflections that are not too distant from the common Otani tongue.
Like other humanoids, the Aydahar are diurnal, though they can adapt to a nocturnal schedule without any trouble, as they must do for their most notable cultural similarity. All six varieties of Aydahar tend to their draconic progenitors. Dragons living with or near Aydahar will have their lairs serviced and cleaned by Aydhar of their type.
Some Aydahar go on to make a career of tending to Dragon needs, but nearly all of their kind will have spent at least some time in the company of a Dragon tending to one need or another.
History
The Aydahar are the only strain truly bothered by the Great Erasure. When the collective memories of all the history of Otan was erased, there were ripples in the Aydahar leadership. They "sensed" a past that other strains could not, possibly due to their draconic essence.
Since the Great Erasure, the borders of Atinqor territory have remained unchanged. There have been various incisions into Alinqor, repeated by the Garis every few years. The only major incursion was during the Garis war in which the Aydahar took sides against the humans led by the Ortalyk Tzar and the Wizard Nikar.
When a peace accord was struck between the warring nations, the Alinqor borders returned to their original lines, the Aydahar having neither gained nor conceded any territory.
Aydahar Substrains
Because of the numerous varieties of dragon, there are also numerous varieties of Aydahar. At least a dozen known variants of the Aydahar race exist on Otan, most of which are identified by the nature of their draconic ancestors.
Altin Aydahar
The Altin Aydahar (π ALL-tin AY-duh-HAR) inhabit and administer the Altin Aydahar Region, the capital district of the Altinqor Confederation.
The Altin Aydahar have metallic-colored scales and features similar to that of their Metal Dragon relatives and progenitors. They typically sport two metallic horns that are swept back from the tops of their heads. In addition to the standard Aydahari traits, the Altin Aydahar have a close relationship with metal, though not necessarily gold as the name suggests (altin being the old-Otani name for gold).
The Altin Aydahar possess an organ enabling them to absorb and digest metals, which they excrete into their scales as a form of protection. They do this by employing the same biological technique as a Metal Dragon. This unusual trait, if applied often, can make the Altin Aydahar naturally resistant to cuts and scrapes from slashing weapons.
Aq Aydahar
The Aq Aydahar (π ACK AY-duh-HAR) of the Aq Aydahar Region have a white coloring to their skin and features that match those of their Ice Dragon ancestors.
Like their draconic progenitors, the Ice Dragons, the Aq Aydahar thrive in cold weather and prefer to live in the coldest settings possible. Unfortunately, Altinqor boasts a temperate climate. To combat the heat, the Aq Aydahar will often inhabit the mountainous regions in Altinqor's north, at the highest altitudes they can find.
Aq Aydahars or even Ice Dragons for that matter, will sometimes leave Altinqor for the mountains in Otan's northern interior. The Aq Aydahar are so inclined toward the cold that they can generate an entropic anomaly that drains heat from their breaths, creating a frost breath that they can use to attack a foe. This ability, if trained and combined with the various other physical attributes of the Aq Aydahar gives them a natural resistance to the cold.
Jasil Aydahar
The Jasil Aydahar (π JAH-zill AY-duh-HAR) are native to the Jasil Aydahar Region of Altinqor. They inherit their genetic makeup from their Water Dragon ancestors or possibly even an adult (or older) Water Dragon parent.
The Jasil Aydahar can be distinguished by other Aydahar by their greenish or aquamarine coloring. They may also feature a dorsal fin, webbed hands, webbed feet, and even visible gills. In addition to the usual Aydahar traits, the Jasil Aydahar have a close relationship with the water. They are often able to spend an indefinite amount of time underwater in both ocean and lake water.
The Jasil Aydahar are able to conduct life normally underwater, from activities like eating to regular activities pertaining to their archetype, such as studying or training. Because of their high capacity for working in low-oxygen environments, they can also show resistance to breathable poisons.
Kara Aydahar
The Kara Aydahar (π CAR-ruh AY-duh-HAR) are native to the Kara Aydahar Region of the Altinqor Confederation. They share their genetic makeup with their Rock Dragon progenitors.
The Kara Aydahar are sometimes referred to as Black Aydahar or Rock Aydahar because of their relationship with Rock Dragons. Like Rock Dragons, a Kara Aydahar individual may end up the color of any rock found in nature, but the ancient word for black, "kara" stuck with them. They can be distinguished from other Aydahar by their gritty rock-like coloring and often high-contrast swept-back horns.
In addition to the standard Aydahar traits, the Kara Aydahar have a close relationship with the type of stone with which they have the most contact. This stone, in particular, provides them with most of their color. Kara Aydahar bodies contain an organ enabling them to excrete liquefied stone from their pores, which hardens to form their outer scales. This innate ability can make the Kara Aydahar naturally resistant to acid, slashing, and piercing weapon attacks.
Kizil Aydahar
The Kizil Aydahar (π KIH-zhil AY-duh-HAR) are the keepers of the Kizil Aydahar Region of the Altinqor Confederation. They share their genetic makeup with their Fire Dragon progenitors.
The Kizil Aydahar Region of the Altinqor is home to the hot-blooded Kizil Aydahar. A Kizil Aydahar individual may have an actual Fire Dragon as a parent. This would have involved a tense moment for the individual's mother when a full-grown Dragon would have infected her with its "essence".
Kizil Aydahar can be distinguished from other Aydahar by their red coloring and white-tipped backward-swept horns. In addition to the standard Aydahari traits, the Kizil Aydahar have a close relationship with fire. Their bodies contain an organ enabling them to produce and spit a fiery blast, much in the same way a Fire Dragon can. If trained, this ability will also grant the Kizil Aydahar a natural resistance to fire.
Koke Aydahar
The Koke Aydahar of the Koke Aydahar Region are most often noted for their blue coloring, which can range from light blue to a nearly black navy. The scales may appear metallic in nature, though they possess no metals. Like that of their Lightning Dragon ancestors, they can also be distinguished by a propensity for creating and/or attracting lightning. If developed, their natural ability to generate large electrical charge gives them a natural resistance to electrical shock.
Culturally, the Koke Aydahar do not just appear to be blue, but they come with a neverending love for the color blue. They will use blue in their clothing, their art and their architecture. The entire city of Koke is often referred to as "The Blue City" as it is well coated in blue pigments.
Half-Aydahar
Half-Aydahar can be found throughout much of the Altinqor and the Free States. They can live in any country on Otan more or less safely, however they prefer to be near others who share draconic blood. Half-Aydahars will have 1/4 or less draconic blood, taking them a degree away from full Aydahar integration.
In Aydahar, the Half-Aydahar are treated fairly and they participate in government just as do any other citizens. If their bloodline is diluted enough that they appear to be regular humans, however, life in Aydahar can become difficult. For this reason many Half-Aydahar will migrate to the Free States where bloodlines are not considered to be very important by anyone.
Half-Aydahar have a very wide range of appearances. On one side, they can be indistinguishable from a full Aydahar and on the other, they can be indistinguishable from a Human. Their faces tend to look more human, but it is not unusual for them to retain the horns of their draconic ancestors. They will likely also possess the draconic sac enabling them to spit one manner of damage or another. They will also have resistance to that chose type of damage.
Aydahar Countries
Altinqor
Altinqor is a country populated by the draconic-blooded Aydahar and every manner of dragon on Otan. The country is made up of ten regions, five of which roughly represent a chromatic dragon (red, blue, etc.) and five which represent metallic dragons (gold, silver, etc.). About 80% of the Aydahar people bear the strong features and colors of their dragon progenitors. The rest of the country is made up of mixed colors, and features of varied and interesting combinations.
