The Second Collateral Session began with our newest hero Darwin, a plucky young fighter and adventurer, breakfasting at a small town west of Jalinbeti. Rayjok Halperion found himself in the company of two unusual strangers, Dweorg and a Half-Aydahar. The Dweorg introduced himself as Caladan Ironforge and the Half-Aydahar introduced herself as Togzhan Kuat.
A New Beginning[edit]
While the two new party members explained what brought them to a quiet little hamlet in western Ortalyk they noticed that Rayjok was receiving continuous praise for his deeds of the previous night... those deeds, being the dispatching of some very persistent zombies. Rayjok explained that his cohort Darwin was under the weather and that he could use a little help investigating the zombie disturbances in this and surrounding areas.
After offering the pair a sum of 50 gold each for their assistance, they returned to the scene of the previous evening. Before arriving, however, the party heard an ominous "WUMMMMM" echoing from the southeast. The site of the previous night's affair was a graveyard, with various graves pushed open from within and a pile of charred bones shouldering from an earlier bonfire.
Bring Out Your Dead[edit]
All was not quiet at the scene, however, and the party noted that one... then two... then as many as six of the gravesites were making a distinct thumping. Rayjok fetched a pair of old shovels from nearby and he and Caladan began excavating two of the noisiest sites. Caladan being the more instinctive digger soon had zombie hands reaching for him.
While Caladan fought his zombie in the pit, other zombies started to emerge from their graves. The zombies fell opon both Rayjok and Caladan while Togzhan threw Firebolt at them from a distance back. The battle moved back and forth, and the zombies once killed had a habit of reviving themselves. Eventually the party was able to get Togzhan to make sure that each of the corpses had had a taste of at least one Firebolt.
When the fray was concluded the party took what was salvageable in the form of gold, gems and for some reason, a few healing potion... evidently an insurance policy for a someone buried alive. The remaining bones were piled in a pyre and burned.
DM Note: I have not considered what would happen if an undead person were to drink a healing potion.
When the party had concluded its business with the aftermath they returned to the hamlet, received a shower of praise from the inhabitants and Rayjok, deciding he had enough information to return to Jalinbeti, arranged for horses for the pair and rode back to meet with Hedgewind Jalinbeti.
Jalinbeti in the Evening[edit]
The party arrived at Jalinbeti that evening and went straight to see Hedgewind in his office. He was please to hear that Rayjok had completed the quest, but gave no clue as to whether he knew what was causing the rising of the undead. He tossed each of the party members a bag of gold and suggested that they spend the night and consider taking on a list of errands that he had dreamed up the night previous.
Rayjok, now a veteran of running quests for Hedgewind, agreed to take on the list of quests...
