The Sawdager (🔊 SAW-dah-gur) are perhaps among the most ambitious people in all of Otan. While even the simplest creatures understand basic trade, the Sawdager have perfected trade into an art form.

Overview[edit]

A regular Human will understand that goods can be exchanged for pieces of gold, for example. A Sawdager will understand so much more. A Sawdager will understand that goods have a cost of production, production durations, and completion schedules, cost of transport, logistics costs, insurance, and of course, storage.

Not only do they instinctively understand how to get the goods to a wholesaler, they automatically consider distribution to retail outlets, how to maintain customer relations with retailers, handle special circumstances and requests, and manage the localization issues with distributing products in foreign lands.

Physical Characteristics[edit]

The Sawdager substrain exemplifies the Kuulik strain with a typical physical height of around 120cm (4 ft.). They are identifiable among other Kuulik by the reddish coloring of their nose and ears. The amount of redness can vary from one person to another.

Their hair is uniformly black, with male-pattern baldness occurring in males as young as 20. As with nearly every strain, both male and female Sawdagers will start to gray around their 40th year. They are typically slim and agile even into their waning years.

Natural and Latent Abilities[edit]

The Sawdager have a natural sense for the flow of a "deal". Whenever figures, times, distances, or other circumstances arise where calculations are in order, they have a drive to solve or improve upon those calculations. Depending on the nature of the individual, they may boast this prowess, but are more likely to use such calculations to create a profitable deal.

Common Mutations[edit]

The only common physical mutation among the Sawdager is the ability to see in low light that occurs in some individuals.

Sawdager Culture[edit]

Sawdagers embrace ex-pat culture. There are few Sawdager families who do not have family members living abroad. Sawdagers may observe Kuulik traditions privately, but they will do so within their own homes and out of the view of the public. They will casually observe local traditions, however, regardless of the country or culture that they are in. It is good for business.

If a Sawdager-run business is operating in a village that is celebrating an agricultural festival, for example, you can be sure that the Sawdager proprietor will contribute to the event as appropriate. They will decorate their shop to commemorate the event and donate generously to any village-wide festivities. They may even participate in any local ceremonies, regardless of how silly they may personally view the event.

Lifestyle[edit]

Sawdagers think about trade and the Kuulik Trading Company. Regardless of what they are doing or where they are, in the back of their minds, they are doing calculations. Can anything in their minds somehow benefit them or the KTC commercially? Even if near death, they are unable to shed these thoughts.

Ordinary cultural considerations, such as venerating a certain day because of something historical, religious, traditional, or otherwise, are a waste of their time. They will observe such events to be "seen" observing them if they think it will be a boon to trade or other business. It can be said that if not for corporate culture, the Sawdager would have no culture at all.

Diet[edit]

Of the many substrains that inhabit Otan, every one can be described as omnivorous. The Sawdager, however, take the definition of an omnivore and turn it on its ear. They have a habit of melding into their local culture's culinary habits. Whether the menu consists of sauteed tree bark or fermented beetle juice, a typical Sawdager will never turn a blind eye to a good meal.

This trend also holds true in other cultural arenas, with Sawdagers frequenting and appearing to enjoy the various cultural offerings of their hosts. They will sing the songs, dance the dances, and they will unquestioningly jump into any culinary dish that is set before them.

Religion[edit]

The Sawdagers are as close to atheists as possible in the Lands of Otan. The gods certainly exist, and they grant power to many, while making intercessions in the lives of many more. The will and agendas of the gods concern the Sawdagers, however.

They see these divine agendas as having very mortal characteristics. The capriciousness, greed, vanity, and other characteristics that the gods regularly display leave the Sawdager reluctant to show praise. They are perhaps the only Substrain on Otan to view the gods as powerful creatures, but likely not divine entities (gasp!).

Sawdager Observances[edit]

The Sawdager have few observances that they carry to other countries. The celebrations held on the Kuulik Peninsula are thought of as sad reminders of a home to which they may never return. While they will take part in local observances, only a few of their own observances are strictly held.

They will not work on a Senbi, for example. Regardless of the local customs, Sawdagers will refuse to work or open their shops on a Senbi except in extreme emergencies. Senbi, the 6th and holiest day of the week, holds no religious significance to the Sawdager. Their observance is to remind every Sawdager that first they are individuals and second they are employees of the Kuulik Trade Company.

Sawdagers will observe their weekly Senbi day off to enjoy the local environment, complete chores around the home, or spend quality time with their children. A very small minority of Sawdagers will actually participate in religious events on this day.

Sawdager Geography[edit]

Sawdager Kuulik can be found in nearly every large city and village on Otan. While half their numbers do reside on the Kuulik Peninsula and its islands, the remainder live and work out of shops, shipping facilities, warehouses, and other trade and transport industries worldwide.

Sawdagers are always looking to expand their business to any town that does not already have Kuulik businesses running within. Should you find a town without a Sawdager-run business, you can probably wager that there are Sawdagers in the local inn negotiating a deal for the next business to enter the town.
