On Governing Grendel is the 16th of sixty-four Memes of Aspan which were mistakenly shared with the Otani people by Suu, the Aspanist goddess of the night. This particular meme was once thought to be in the possession of the Grendel leadership deep in Maercland. In recent years, particularly since the Grendel War, it has been evident that the Grendel had lost their treasures.

It is suspected, that this second of the two Memes of Aspan dedicated to the Grendel had somehow found its way into the hands of Ortalyk-based wizards. Spellcasters of every stripe have taken a keen interest in the Memes of Aspan lately, not for the information they carry, which is valuable in itself, but for the advanced properties of the memes themselves.

Meme Contents[edit]

To decipher the meme's contents, one simply needs to be able to read the Old Otani language. The meme's contents have been said to vary by the scarce few who have had experience with this meme, but at present, there are several detailed sections as follows:

  • On Establishing Power
  • On Establishing Order
  • On Orderly Succession
  • On Constitutions
  • On Taxation and Tariffs
  • On Trade and Commerce
  • On Cities and Towns
  • On Rivers and Roads
  • On Fortifications
  • On Establishing a Military
  • On the Elderly
  • On Agriculture
  • On Education
  • On Worship

Manipulating the Meme with one's fingers allows scrolling of the information from page to page. Every page is very specific to the culture and tastes of the Grendel. For example "On Orderly Succession" might involve single combat between two rivals for a position in a military or political hierarchy. This would not be acceptable in most other cultures, but is de rigeur for Grendel seeking power.
