Frigg is the wife of Woden and the goddess of love, the home and hearth. Worshippers of Frigg generally include all Wodenists with a heart, however, those involved in such professions as midwifery have been known to cast their prayers exclusively to Frigg.
Depictions of Frigg[edit]
Frigg is most often depicted as a beautiful middle-aged blonde woman. She is often seated at a spinning wheel or loom, though sometimes seated at a throne. She's often attended by one or more handmaidens and several animals.
Frigg in Otan Lore[edit]
Frigg is the wife of Woden and mother to Thor and Baeldaeg. When it was foretold that Baeldaeg would be killed, Frigg walked the forests and made concords with all the things in nature to promise never to harm her son. Alas, in her thoroughness she had overlooked the simple mistletoe, perhaps considering it harmless.
Meanwhile, the trickster Loki fashioned a spear (or possibly arrow) of mistletoe which was hurled at Baeldaeg at a game during a feast. The arrow pierced his heart sending Baeldaeg to the underworld. Frigg, in her unmatched love, did not answer this sad event with spite or revenge. She raised up the mistletoe as a symbol of love. To this day lovers kiss under mistletoe and potion makers use it liberally in their philters of love.
